Before your scheduled procedure at Hackensack Surgery Center, please review the information in this section to find out more information about your visit.
Your physician will schedule your procedure with our center. Prior to your procedure, one of our nurses will call you to ask questions about your health history, medications and past surgeries.
Please have all of this information ready. Please ensure that you make arrangements to have a responsible adult drive you to HSC one hour prior to your procedure, and again drive you home once discharged. To ensure your safety, it is state mandated to have someone stay with you at home following the procedure.
Please prepare for your procedure by not smoking. Smoking and being around smoke produces mucous and increases the risk of complications. Patients who have a history of emphysema and/or bronchitis should avoid being around smokers for at least forty eight hours prior to surgery. Also, please stop anti-inflammatory medications seven days prior to your procedure to prevent thinning of blood and avoid clotting problems.
You will receive a telephone call from one of our Pre-operative nurses to confirm the date and time of your surgery. The nurse will review with you your medical and surgical history, medications you may be taking and will give you special instructions for the surgery. Transportation may be provided to qualifying patients. Transportation service will call you the night before to confirm your address and time of pick up. We recommend that you have someone accompany you on the day of surgery.
Remember, no eating or drinking prior to surgery, please wear loose comfortable clothing and flat supportive shoes. You will need to change into a patient gown prior to your procedure. If you wear contact lenses, please wear glasses that day. If you don't have glasses, bring a contact lens case and remove them prior to your procedure.
Please leave all jewelry, money and valuables at home. Wearing jewelry of any kind (including body piercings) is not permitted during surgery. Please remove all nail polish and/or makeup prior to surgery.
Upon arrival, you will be greeted by one of our registration staff. They will make copies of your ID such as your driver’s license and Insurance card. You will also be asked to complete and sign health documents. After completing the paperwork, you will be escorted to the Pre-operative suite. You will meet the Pre-operative nurse who will perform a complete assessment, review your medical /surgical history, check and record your vital signs. You will also meet the Anesthesiologist, your surgeon and the Operating room nurse. This is the time when you sign the consent for the surgery, for anesthesia and for you to present any concern and any last questions you have about your procedure.
When the surgical team is ready for you, the Operating room nurse will get you and escort you to the Operating room suite where your surgery will be performed.
Following surgery, you will be immediately transferred to the PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit) for close monitoring and observation while recovering from anesthesia. Once fully awake, the nurse will go over the discharge instructions with you and your family. You will be provided with copies of your discharge instructions to refer to once you are home. You will be escorted to your car with your family. One of the nurses will call you the day after your surgery to check your recovery. If they are unable to reach you on the first call, they will try two- to three more times. Please try to return our call as we are really interested in knowing how you are doing after surgery. If our calls remain unanswered, we will send you a follow-up letter.
